Hello! My name is Dr. Lauren Braley, and I am a Physical Therapist (PT), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), and Neurologic Clinical Specialist (NCS).

My career journey has led me to specialize in fall prevention, an area I’m deeply passionate about.

Currently, I serve at Oakwood Creative Care, where my role involves educating others on preventing falls, a significant concern for aging populations, as well as bringing forth awareness and support to those living with Parkinson’s Disease.

Physical therapy is not just for after a fall. Many older adults can benefit from physical therapy for different reasons. In this post, we will talk about three common problems that physical therapy can help with, common injuries that caregivers face, how they can get help, and how you can receive physical therapy from the comfort of your home.

Common Issues Physical therapy can help with:

Many assume that physical therapy is only for when you’ve been hurt; however, it can help with other problems, too! Three conditions wherein physical therapy can make a huge difference include:

Joint Pain—As we age, our joints can start to hurt, making it hard to move around. Physical therapy can help by providing exercises that strengthen your muscles and ease pain.

Balance Problems—Sometimes, older adults might start feeling unsteady on their feet, potentially leading to falls. Physical therapy can teach you specific exercises to improve your balance and make you feel more confident when walking.

Weak Muscles—Over time, our muscles can weaken. This makes it harder to perform our usual day-to-day activities, such as getting up from a chair or carrying groceries into the house. Physical therapy can help you regain your strength so you can stay active.

Common Caregiver Injuries & How To Prevent Them:

Taking care of a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s can be hard on your body. Because of this, caregivers often experience physical injuries, including back pain, shoulder strain, and

persistent knee problems. Here are some of the ways that physical therapy can help caregivers ease their aches and pains:

Back Pain—Lifting and moving someone can cause obvious strain on your back. Physical therapy can teach you the right way to lift a person and provide you with exercises to keep your back feeling strong.

Shoulder Strain—Lifting, reaching, and supporting a loved one can hurt your shoulders. A physical therapist can help you learn how to stretch and strengthen your shoulders in a way that relieves and prevents any further strain.

Knee Problems – Knee pain can be caused by repetitive and strenuous bending and kneeling. Through physical therapy, you can find a set of exercises that will strengthen your knees and reduce pain.

Getting Physical THERAPY AT HOME:

Did you know you don’t always have to go to a clinic for physical therapy? Sometimes, a therapist can come right to your home! This is called home health physical therapy, and it provides a fantastic option for older loved ones and caregivers who lead busy lives or who may prefer to try new exercises from the privacy of their homes. Here’s what you need to know:

Your doctor may need to refer you for home health physical therapy. If you have questions about finding in-network services, contact your insurance provider. Then, make sure your home is safe and has enough space for you to do your exercises. Not sure where to start? That’s okay! Consider these suggestions for enhancing the space within your home.

Once your appointment is set, a physical therapist will visit you at home and show you exercises specific to your daily needs. They might also help you with equipment that makes moving around easier.

Now, if you or your loved one is in the hospital, you have a choice in the next steps of care. Sometimes, the hospital may recommend going to a skilled nursing facility. However, if you feel that home health physical therapy is a better fit, you can discuss this option with your care team! It’s important to consider all the factors, like how much support you have at home, how many hours of therapy you’ll need each week, and what’s best for your recovery. You have a voice in your care, and it’s okay to ask questions and explore all your options!

Physical Therapy Is A Benefit To Everyone!

Physical therapy can be a big help for both older adults and their caregivers. Whether you’re dealing with joint pain or trying to stay strong while caring for a loved one, physical therapy can make life easier. And with the option of home health physical therapy, getting the care you need is more convenient than ever!
