How One Volunteer Woodworker Is Connecting Older Adults
July 27, 2024

A volunteer for Oakwood Creative Care has been using his skills to connect older adults with cognitive and physical challenges. Meet Ron, an experienced and incredibly gifted woodworker who has been gracious enough to lend his passions to the members of our Adult Day Clubs

Combining Experience with Community-Based Volunteer Work

Ron joined the Oakwood volunteer family as a participant in Experience Matters, a community-based project intended to connect uniquely skilled older and retirement-age adults with local nonprofit organizations.

Recently, Ron has put his many talents to work by helping with renovations at The Dementia Hub. One such project was a beautiful book tree he designed to hold caregiver resources.

Ron has an exceptionally gifted knack for woodworking. He has thus offered a helping hand in expanding Oakwood’s capacity to provide age-appropriate activities to local Arizonians with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other cognitive and physical challenges.

With his gifts, Ron has made a hundred woodworking kits to be dispersed within the community, allowing care partners and families to enjoy a new, engaging, and dignifying activity with their loved ones.

Ron has also been conducting woodworking classes within Oakwood’s Day Clubs, teaching older adults the fundamentals and excitement of the craft. His most recent project with Town Center Day Club has centered around connecting members – through Connect Four! Ron has been guiding Club members through the fun of handcrafting their very own jumbo-sized game, and we cannot wait to see the result!

Thank you, Ron, for all you have done for Oakwood’s members and their families!
